During the summer of 2012, I went to a summer internship at the University of Massachusetts Medical School at Worcester, under the supervision of MD Ph.D. Jeanine Ward.
Description of career experience (what I learned):
The investigation was a clinical investigation, with patients with chest pain that arrived to UMass Medical Hospital. We were trying to find a marker to detect a heart attack earlier than the patient having one. We used PCR and electrophoresis.
What is your perception of agriculture now:
Agriculture is important for the humans because it is the only way that you can produce some products necessary forhealth and survival.
How has this career experience broadened your employment opportunities:
In the research I centrifuged blood plasma from patients with chest pain and we analyzed some markers from them to look for a biomarker to detect a heart attack earlier
than the patients having one; we used PCR, electrophoresis to analyze them. Knowledge about the different laboratory techniques can help me in the future, maybe in
graduate school as well, because it has been so extensive.
Career and research aspirations:
My future aspiration is to undertake a PhD or Pharm D. I want to increase my knowledge of what is an investigation because through this we can identify problems and get
information about how we can improve our lives and our health.
Some of my skills are interpersonal communication skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, teamwork skills, and decision making skills.
The impact of my career experience:
The research internship has given me the necessary skills to be a good scientific person in the future, I also learned some techniques like PCR, Electrophoresis, DNA
extraction, analysis of markers and proteins. This experience introduce me to the world of the scientific research, with this I can explore, and investigate. During this
learning process I have been able to be a part of various organizations in the university, centralized in investigations and environment conservation. I learned a lot. I
conducted investigations with professors, learned new skills in investigations, and sub-graded as a volunteer. My future goal is finish a PhD.
